dog of the day :
The Irish Wolfhound has a large, muscular greyhound-like shape, and he is the tallest of dogs, but not the heaviest. A superb athlete and an endurance runner, an old Irish proverb describes him perfectly: “Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked.” Although now primarily a family companion, the Irish Wolfhound will still instinctively give chase to fleeing prey. His large size commands more room, more exercise, and a bigger car.
The breed’s recognized colors are gray, brindle, red, black, pure white, fawn and others. The breed’s harsh, natural coat requires regular brushing. The minimum height and weight of dogs should be 32 inches and 120 pounds; of bitches, 30 inches and 105 pounds; these to apply only to hounds over 18 months of age.
An easygoing animal, Irish wolfhounds are quiet by nature. Wolfhounds often create a strong bond with their family and can become quite destructive if left alone for long periods of time. Despite the need for their own people, wolfhounds generally are somewhat stand-offish with total strangers. They should not be territorially aggressive to other domestic dogs but are born with specialized skills and it is common for hounds at play to course another dog. This is a specific hunting behavior, not a fighting or territorial domination behavior. Most wolfhounds are very gentle with children and are aware of their size and power. The Irish wolfhound is relatively easy to train. They respond well to firm, but gentle, consistent leadership.

Meet “Chelsea" a pretty mix dog from Danbury, CT.

helsey gets nervous around new people and is easily startled by loud noises. Luckily for Chelsey our dedicated volunteers are committed to socializing her and getting her used to unfamiliar sights and sounds.

Are you a patient person and an experienced dog owner? Would you be willing to spend some time getting to know Chelsey and provide her with a quiet, adult only home? She would prefer to be the only dog too but does enjoy the company of cats. Please come by and ask to see her.

Meet “Ricky" and "Lucy”, two gorgeous Macaws from Schererville, IN.
Ricky (Ruby Macaw) and Lucy (Catalina Macaw) have been friends since they were hatchlings, and they are 25-years old. Since they are long-time friends they need to go to a home together!
They love to vocalize and say things like “Hi” “Food!” and “I love you!”, and are not adopted into places with multiple-dwellings like condos, apartments, etc because of their volume. They are beautiful birds and looking for a forever home!

dog of the day:
The Bichon Frise. A cheerful, happy dog, the Bichon Frise is small and sturdy with a dark-eyed inquisitive expression and a plumed tail it carries merrily over the back. The Bichon is a naturally gentle, playful dog. He loves activity and requires regular exercise. His hair grows continually and does not shed, so extensive grooming is a must to prevent mats. Bichons also tend to be a good breed for allergy sufferers.
The coat must be white, but may have shadings of buff, cream or apricot around the ears or on the body. Height is 91/2 to 11 1/2 inches to the withers.
personal note: We have a family dog in addition to my puppy, and he is a Bichon. He is older now so he’s gotten into a bit of a ‘dementia’ state, which happens sometimes to any breed in their ‘elder years’ But i grew up with this breed and we loved him, he was always playful and fun and perfect for us kids (but we were gentle!)
he (Chucky!) is intelligent and he learn cool tricks very fast. in fact, in history, Bichons were used as circus dogs! only thing i will say is that Bichons can be hard to house train at first, and Chucky proved that to us, but he caught on ;]
